Gallstones vs Gas Pain and How Can You Tell the Difference

There are many potential causes of abdominal pain, but two of the more prevalent among them are gallstones and gas pain. Both can cause discomfort in the upper stomach, so it’s not uncommon to mistake one for the other. At Safe Surgery Center Agra we guide our patients about the distinction so that they can get their treatment on time.

1. What are Gallstones?

Gallstones are hardened deposits of digestive fluid that can form in your gallbladder which is a small organ under your liver which stores bile that aids in digestion. When these stones obstruct bile ducts they lead to the sudden, excruciating pain known as biliary colic. The pain can be in the upper right side of the abdomen and may radiate to the back or right shoulder. It can last for half an hour to a few hours and is usually triggered by eating heated or fatty food. Other possible signs and symptoms include nausea, vomiting and a feeling of satiety.

2. What Is Gas Pain?

Air or gas in the intestines is what causes gas pain. "Cramping pain: This pain is usually mild and located in the lower abdomen, but can move or be relieved by passing gas or having a bowel movement. Gas pain tends to be brief and is not usually confined to one side. This can be due to eating too fast, drinking carbonated beverages, or eating foods that cause gas such as beans, onions, or dairy.

3. Key Differences

• Location of pain: Gallstone pain tends to be on the right side of the upper abdomen, while gas pain can be felt anywhere in the stomach.

• Duration: The length of gallstone pain is longer and no relief from passing gas is experienced.

• Associated symptoms: Gallstones can make you feel nauseated, make you vomit or cause jaundice (yellowing of eyes or skin), but gas pain almost never does.
